It’s been almost seven months since my book came out and I’ve gone from being writer to publisher. I admit, I check the Goodreads page from time to time, part bravery, part curiosity. I tend to say I’ve already dissociated myself with my book — I’ve labored on it for years (technically) that I already want to move on to the next — but I am curious if there are people who are still reading the book. I’m afraid that it’ll just be another blip in the publishing scene. There’s no need to sum up reviews here, you can go to the Goodreads page. If you’ve read the book and would like to tell me your thoughts, please let me know! If it’s negative… well, just write about it online haha. I’m a weenie! I’m sorry!

I’ll be out of a day job come July (that essay is coming later haha) and I’m still too embedded in my 9-to-5 (as I should) that I still haven’t thought about my second book. There are rough talks here and there with my publishers for the already existing manuscript but I’m a little hesitant about it. But the constant emphasis on the fleeting nature of digital material had me thinking about putting those writings into a book. And it’ll be my little contribution to Philippine cinema/literature too, perhaps? More discussions ahead.
But the actual sequel to Brief Histories is what I want to think about. I’ll have enough time, I hope to create an outline for the book or think about what I want the book to become but I still have no idea what to write. Do I want more memoirs? Reportage? Fiction maybe?? I’m obviously thinking out loud here but I just want to let you know, reader who has bought my book, that I am thinking about it!! I’m looking forward to read lots soon, both for me and for my new work! And I hope they’ll help!

If you haven’t heard, I’ve joined the new press Exploding Galaxies as editor and we’ll be publishing lost/out-of-print gems of Philippine literature that deserve to have another time in the sun. Our first book is Wilfrido D. Nolledo’s fiery novel But for the Lovers, which hasn’t been published in the Philippines. I’ve only read parts of the book before, in pieces, as the Dalkey edition is quite hard to get if you don’t have a card or access to Amazon. I’ve been rereading the novel and it’s mind-blowing, particularly Nolledo’s prose style. I get lost in it sometimes but it is quite rewarding. I hope you all pre-order. The book is designed (by Miguel Mari, our former Rogue Magazine boss, during the top tier era haha) and is made to be read comfortably. But for the Lovers is the beginning of a series so completists should buy now. We’re already working on our second book, Linda Ty-Casper’s The Three-Cornered Sun, another firecracker of a novel. I’ve underlined so many passages in the book, I broke it in half.
The official pubdate of Exploding Galaxies’ edition of But for the Lovers is on June 10th. Please pre-order or tell book-loving friends about it!
